Also known as Bisoke, Mount Bisoke is an active Volcano found in the heart of magnificent Mountains of Virunga in the Albertine Rift Valley. It forms part of the 8 mountains that make up Virunga massif.

The mountain straddles the boarder of Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, about thirty five kilometers on the north eastern side of Goma town and lies adjacent to Lake Kivu. It separates Virunga national park in D.R. Congo and Volcanoes national park in Rwanda

Mount. Bisoke is one of the mountains in East Africa with a crater lake on its summit.

The history of Mount. Bisoke.

The mountain traces its name from the local word “Bisoke” which means being soaked in water – a term that is usually used when referring to the two crater lakes on the mountain top. Bisoke has two recorded eruptions which happened in 1891 and 1957 respectively.

The most recent eruption happened 11 kilometers north of the summit which resulted in the formation of 2 small cones on the volcano’s northern flank. There is evidence that the area where this eruption occurred is still geologically active, suggesting that future activity at Bisoke is likely to happen.

Hiking Mount. Bisoke.

Hiking Mount. Bisoke usually comes after visitors are done with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park or Virunga national park.

It is an opportunity for visitors to climb the 3,711 meters’ mountain and get to the crater lakes for amazing experiences. Hikes usually kickoff at 7:00am with briefing by the officials. You are then assigned a guide who will lead you to the top of the mountain. The expedition gives mesmerizing views of nature such as the neighboring Virunga Mountains and the Crater lakes on top of the mountain.

Getting there.

You can get to Mt. Bisoke using the nearest airport in Goma or else board a bus from Kigali city or Kampala city via Ruhengeri. The journey from Kigali can last from about 4 hours and 28 minutes on road.

Accommodation.

While on a visit to Mt. Bisoke, accommodation should not worry you since the area is full of lodges and hotels ranging from budget, mid-range up to luxury. It all depends on your budget.

They include; Sabyinyo Safari Lodge, Muhabura hotel, Kiningi Guest house, to mention but a few.
