1 Day Mabamba Swamp Tour ; This birding excursion takes you to Mabamba swamp to look out for the elusive shoebill stork. Mabamba is the most reliable place to see the shoebill stork in Uganda. It is located in the west of Entebbe on the northern shores of Lake Victoria. Areas where the bird is commonly spotted are accessed after sailing in a dugout canoe with the sailor and an expert birding guide.

Details and program of the shoebill birding tour

You will wake up early morning, have breakfast at your lodge and meet your safari guide. Drive from your lodge to Mabamba where you will meet your guide site guide for the day. The tour will run from morning to afternoon, and it is also fine to start the tour in the afternoon and end in the evening.

Get aboard the canoe with your guide and head out through the overgrown papyrus to areas where we hope to see the shoebill stork. This area hosts many other bird species including the African Jacana, Grey-headed Gull, Spur-winged Lapwing, Angola Swallow, Grey-rumped Swallow, Swamp Flycatcher, African Fish Eagle, Glossy Ibis, Olive bellied Sunbird, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, White-winged Tern, Long-tailed Cormorant, Little Stint, Yellow-billed Duck, White-faced Whistling-Duck, Malachite Kingfisher, Madagascar Bee-eater, Hamerkop, Spur-winged Goose, Wayne’s weaver, Knob-billed Duck, Black-winged Stilt and Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird among others. Best time of the day to spot the shoebill

The best time of the day to see the shoebill at Mabamba is in the morning. But also the afternoon has many times given good records for seeing the bird just only that it comes with high risks of the local fishermen to interfere with the shoebill.

Getting to Mabamba swamp

From Kampala, you will drive through Kawuku-Nakawuka road and turn at Kasanje. From Entebbe town, you take a boat from the Nakiwogo landing site and sail to the wetland where you meet the local guide.
