9 Days Explore Rwanda Adventure

This 9 days Rwanda safari takes you to the most attractive destinations where you will take part in a city tour of your second day and this will expose you to different city based attractions like local markets, Kigali Genocide Memorial Site and much more.

On the fourth day, you will take part in chimpanzee tracking and canopy walk and take part in gorilla trekking, hiking to the Dian Fossey grave in Volcanoes national park and on your last day, take part in hot air balloon tour and boat cruise in Akagera national park. Have joyous time while on this 9 days safari in the land of a thousand hills.

Detailed itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to a hotel in Kigali.

The driver guide will be at Kigali airport waiting for you, marking the first day of your safari. You will then head to the hotel upon arrival after briefing. Relax, have dinner and night stay.

Day 2: City tour in Kigali.

Take a long city excursion in Kigali where you will visit places like the local markets of Kimironko and Kigali central market. They display different kinds of hand crafts, art galleries and fresh food stuff including fruits.

Visit the Kigali memorial center, to learn about genocide history of Rwanda, the former presidential Palace where you will learn about the political history and fall of dictator Habyarimana’s regime in 1994. Later on, you will hike to one of the hills overlooking the city, rewarding you with the perfect scenery for photography.

Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park.

Head to Nyungwe forest national park where you will take part in two activities and these are chimpanzee tracking and canopy walk the following day. This journey will take about 5 hours while traversing in the country side of the Rwanda. Arrive and transfer to the lodge for checking in and dinner.

Day 4: Chimpanzee tracking and canopy walk.

Have breakfast in the morning and head for briefing at the park offices, stipulating the dos and don’ts to follow while trekking. You will be told not to use flash light cameras, not leaving litter in the forest, do not eat near the chimpanzees, don’t chase or scare chimpanzees and much more.

Later head in the forest to search for these primates and on locating them, you will spend an hour in their presence. Trek back to the starting point and meet your driver guide and the overall experience takes about 3 to 7 hours.

You will be driven to your lodge for lunch break. Return to the office for briefing this afternoon for a great canopy walk. This bridge is suspended on top of trees on a height of 70m and 160m long. This rewards you with sightings of different primates and bird species, taking about 2 hours.

Day 5: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

Embark on an extremely interesting journey, passing via the stunning Lake Kivu for a short boat cruise and later proceed to Volcanoes National Park. This is among few national parks in the world where you can trek the rare mountain gorillas.

This park also is host to the rare golden monkeys, blessed with over 250 bird species. You will arrive after 5 to 6 hours of drive and check in the accommodation facility of your choice.

Day 6: Gorilla trekking and Dian Fossey trek.

Attend a briefing session at the park offices with fellow trekkers, and later head into the forest to start the search. This experience can last for about 3 to 5 hours and one hour will be allocated to you while in the presence of these great apes. Watch them keenly as you spot the silverback who is the head of a gorilla family practicing its leadership skills.

Return to the lodge for lunch break and later drive back to offices of the park where you will meet the park ranger that will take you on a hike to Dian Fossey’s graveyard. You will learn about this primatologist who saved lives of mountain gorillas, started the Karisoke Research Center and started the gorilla habituation experience in the Virunga conservation area.

Day 7: Transfer to Akagera National Park.

Head to the only savannah national park in Rwanda, located along the border with Tanzania. This park is dotted with different lakes with the biggest being Lake Ihema. This lake also harbors crocodiles and hippos.

Akagera national park is home to the big five animals, rare shoe bill stock and much more. Arrive and take part in the evening game drive, creating everlasting memories.

Day 8: Hot air balloon tour and boat cruise.

Take part in the early morning hot air balloon experience where you will be able spot animals and savannah plains with aerial views. Among other animals that will be spotted include lions, elephants, buffalos, Masai giraffes, hippos, warthogs, zebras and much more, lasting for about 2 hours. The basket will be floating in air at a height of 100m and each basket carries between 4 to 6 people.

In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema for another memorable experience. The two hours of a boat cruise will be of everlasting memories as you spot different animals like hippos, crocodiles and many others.

Day 9: Transfer back to Kigali and fly home.

Leave the park premises of Akagera and transfer to Kigali city. In the evening, you will board your scheduled flight back home which will mark the end of this 9 days Rwanda safari.
