Rwanda offers extraordinary gorilla trekking safaris in the magical Volcanoes National Park. Check out this 4 Day Rwanda gorilla trekking and Lake Kivu tour which is a two-in-one travel exploration giving you an opportunity of encountering gorillas and visiting the stunning Lake Kivu.

The safari starts with a pick-up from Kigali International Airport, followed by a drive to Volcanoes national park, gorilla trekking on the second day, and transfer to Lake Kivu on the third day. It will end on the fourth day with a transfer back to Kigali and returning back home.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be picked up by our driver / guide who will drive you to the hotel of your choice around the city for lunch.

After lunch, embark on a two to three hour drive journey northwards to Volcanoes National Park. The journey is full of scenic views of the beautiful landscape, trading centers, rolling hills, plantations, etc. You will arrive at your booked lodge, check in and relax. Later have dinner and and overnight.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake up early morning at around 6:00am, have breakfast and pack your lunchbox plus other trekking requirements. Meet your driver and go to the park headquarters for briefing about gorilla trekking. While here you will get to learn more about the dos and don’ts of trekking. You will be assigned a specific gorilla group to trek and then a ranger / guide as well.

Once you get done with the briefing, the trek begins there and then. It can take you 2-6 hours to end the trek and this depends on the location of the assigned gorilla family. Trekkers and their ranger guides follow the trails and other markings such as dung when searching for the apes. Volcanoes national park is a home to 11 habituated gorilla families ready for trekking every day. Upon encountering the gorillas, you will spend an hour in their presence as you watch them socialize.

Return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Kivu.

After a lip-smirking breakfast, pack your property and check out of the lodge. Meet your driver and transfer to Lake Kivu – a large and one of the deepest fresh water lakes in Central and East Africa.

Check in to the hotel at Lake Kivu, have lunch and relax. In the afternoon you will go and spend some time at the beach. You can engage in some of the activities available, such as swimming, relaxing in the sand, boat riding, playing volleyball, to mention but a few. The lake offers scenic views of the surrounding areas.

Return to your lodge in the later hours of the day for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Transfer to Kigali – departure.

After a morning breakfast, you will check out of the lodge/hotel and meet your driver for a drive back to Kigali city. If time is still in your favor, you can have a short tour around Kigali city, get to see local markets and visit the Genocide Memorial Site.

Have a lunch stopover at any restaurant in the heart of Kigali before continuing to Kigali International Airport for departure.
